Nathan claimed that he was in Australia on a business recruit and stayed a couple of days longer to sight see. He was seated in the tail section of the plane when it crashed.

[edit] The First 44 Days (Season 1)
After crashing onto the island, the survivors of the tail section encountered the mysterious Others who began to kidnap them. Ana-Lucia Cortez wanted to move the remaining survivors away from the beach, but Nathan was against the idea as they had wounded survivors and needed to keep their signal fire lit. However, during one raid on the camp, an Other killed in the raid had a list of names of those who were taken on her body. Immediately suspicions arose as to the possibility of a spy amongst them and the identity of that person. Ana-Lucia immediately questioned Nathan, wondering where he was for two hours the previous day, but Nathan claimed he was going to the bathroom. The remaining survivors decided to abandon the camp and venture into the jungle.
After trekking for three days, Nathan decided to set up camp at a fresh water stream while Ana Lucia wished to push onward. Ana-Lucia relented, but she began to dig a pit in secret to throw Nathan into. Four days later Ana-Lucia knocked Nathan out and threw him into her pit. She had already passed judgment on Nathan, believing that he wasn't on the plane as he never saw him. Cindy agreed, claiming she was good with faces but never saw him either. Libby was also suspicious of Nathan because he never talked about himself.
For four days Ana-Lucia questioned Nathan about what happened to the kids who were taken. Nathan maintained that he was from Canada and was in Sydney as part of a company retreat. Nobody saw him because he was in the lavatory. But Ana-Lucia refused to believe him and tried to starve him into submission, but Eko secretly took food for Nathan until Ana Lucia noticed a banana peel in the pit. Goodwin attempted to talk Ana-Lucia into letting Nathan go, that they weren't savages, but Ana-Lucia refused. The next day she was going to begin cutting fingers off of Nathan to make him talk.
The night before Ana-Lucia could make good on her threat, Goodwin helped Nathan out of the pit and told him to escape. But before Nathan could flee, Goodwin grabbed him from behind and snapped his neck. Goodwin hid Nathan's body and made it look like Ana-Lucia was right, that Nathan really was the mole, in order to keep his identity of the real mole secret.
