Demashita! Powerpuff Girls Z (And They're Off! Powerpuff Girls Z) is an action anime loosely based on the original Powerpuff Girls program about three little girls with superpowers who protect their town from crime and supervillainy.
This series begins with Ken Utonium, the son of the scientific genius Professor Utonium, accidentally dropping a bun into his father's experimental Chemical X, changing it into "Chemical Z". The ensuing explosion creates bursts that spread throughout the town, hitting three normal little girls and transforming them into superheroes. It also hits a monkey at the zoo, turning him into the villainous Mojo Jojo. The three girls end up teaming up to stop the schemes of Mojo Jojo, as well as anyone who might threaten the city.
The anime program differs from the original in several key ways, including the fact that the Powerpuff Girls Z were once normal little girls, while the Powerpuff Girls were outright created by Professor Utonium. The Powerpuff Girls Z have secret identities, something the regular Powerpuff Girls have no need for. There is an increased focus on the character of Blossom. Many of the villains were also redesigned.
Despite Cartoon Network's involvement in the development of the program, it is currently unknown whether the program will be brought to the United States.
