CFCN-DT is a Canadian local station located in Calgary, Alberta, broadcasting on digital channel 29, displaying on digital tuners as virtual channel 4. It is owned by and affiliated with CTV.

History

CFCN began operations on September 9, 1960 as Calgary's second TV station (after CBC Television affiliate CHCT) and Canada's first privately-owned station independent of CBC affiliation. It was originally owned by Calgary's Love family, who also owned radio station CFCN-AM in the city.

CFCN ran as an independent station for its first year until it joined the new CTV network on October 1, 1961. The CFCN TV and radio stations were sold to Maclean-Hunter Ltd. in 1967, and CFCN-TV launched a semi-satellite, CFCN-TV-5, on channel 13 in Lethbridge, Alberta in 1968 by leasing tower and studio space (for technical equipment) from local CBC affiliate CJLH-TV (later CJOC, now CISA).

CFCN-TV-5 moved out of the CJOC building and into its own Lethbridge facilities in 1974. CFCN parent Maclean-Hunter was purchased in 1994 by Rogers Communications, which sold the station in 1996 to Baton Broadcasting, which was purchasing CTV affiliates in its bid to take control of the network. When Baton succeeded in its bid and renamed itself CTV Inc. in 1998, CFCN, along with other CTV-owned stations, received new corporate branding that year.

Beginning in 2002, the CTV-owned stations, including CFCN, dropped their regional brands gradually over the next few years in favor of using the generic CTV network brand, and CFCN is now referred to as CTV Calgary in promotional material for local programs. In 2008, the station had applied for a digital television signal, which was assigned to channel 56 by Industry Canada, but CFCN applied to have the signal moved to channel 36. CFCN-DT went on the air on January 7, 2009, making it CTV's third digital broadcast channel, after CFTO-DT in Toronto and CIVT-DT in Vancouver.

On August 31, 2011, as part of the transition of Canadian television broadcasting from analog to digital, CFCN's channel 4 analog signal went off the air while CFRN-DT's digital signal moved to channel 29.
