CBXT is a Canadian local station in Edmonton, Alberta, owned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and affiliated with CBC Television. It broadcasts on analog channel 5, with a digital channel allocation of 42 (which is not yet on air).

[edit] History

CBXT was signed on by the CBC on October 1, 1961 as Edmonton's second TV station and Alberta's first CBC-owned station, on the same day previous Edmonton affiliate CFRN-TV switched to the new CTV network. It first went by the on-air brand CBXT 5 before switching to become Edmonton/5 on air in the mid-1970s.

In 1980, CBXT adopted the on-air brand XTV (a brand similar to the type used by many independent TV stations in North America). It became known on-air as CBC Edmonton on January 1, 1986 as part of a new on-air corporate identity for network-owned stations. Since 2002, CBXT, along with all other CBC-owned stations, has used the generic CBC Television network identity. When Red Deer CBC affiliate CKRD-TV left the network to join the CH system (now E! Canada) in 2005 and returned to its original call sign CHCA-TV, CBXT added a rebroadcaster, CBXT-13, in Red Deer and took over the former CKRD rebroadcaster in Coronation (CKRD-TV-1), which was renamed CBXT-14.

CBXT's local programming is limited to the supper-hour newscast CBC News: Edmonton, anchored by Tiffany Burns.
